THE GREAT DEBATE, A MATTER OF THE HEART

Have any of you taken the opportunity to watch the GOP debates?  I’ve been watching them and asking Holy Spirit for discernment as this process unfolds.  Recently, while reading two election sermons from 1791 & 1803*, and gleaning from the wisdom of ages past, I found myself in a whole new paradigm for discerning the kind of person who may be called to serve America as president.

As American citizens, we are being asked to vote on a candidate who will lead America (and the world).  This passage in Matthew seems to be an important directive for us to consider, Matthew 5:8.  “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Psalm 24:3-4 also points out the importance of purity, “Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol.” These verses show us that purity of heart allows us to see the Lord and to stand in His council, and we need the ability to “see Him” and “hear” His council to discern which candidates will become righteous rulers. Perhaps purity of heart is why Daniel loved Nebuchadnezzar and why David didn’t kill Saul when given the chance.

As American citizens, when we embrace the vital role of voting and electing a leader who has weighty global impact, it is important to steward the authority given to us by God and man, searching our own heart’s purity as well as the heart of God, standing in His counsel to hear what he is saying.  Could it be that those with pure hearts elect righteous rulers?

Something to consider while watching the debates between candidates;
   These events are heavily influenced by the worldview of the media gurus.  With their place of influence they are discipling America in how to determine the qualifications of an American President. There are valuable questions and points that are addressed, however, very little attention is paid to the condition of their hearts and other values that are vital to the DNA of a great leader.
   What is the condition of their “heart”?  Solomon, after being given the wisdom of God for leading the nation of Israel, wrote this, “Above all else, guard your heart.”  Where do we see this “guarding” being lived out in their life?  Are they able to do the “above all else” given to Solomon when he asked God for wisdom? Does their heart have a Presidential capacity that will thrive with-in the weighty mantle of leading our country into fulfilling its God-given assignment, “on earth as it is in Heaven?”
We know, by our past and present, that intellect and experience are not the sum total of a good or qualified leader.   Most would agree that a leader who has a whole heart would make the best decisions as leader.  ADD A FEW MORE WORDS HERE   because one’s inner reality determines one’s physical reality.  If you have spent any time with the Bethel leadership core, you know this to be true.  The peace, healing, wisdom and freedom that come when you are with them are literally, “not of this world”.  These men and women have learned vital life tools through gaining knowledge, and they are implementing their knowledge with the wisdom of God, creating Heaven’s reality on earth!

This is what I am listening for when I listen to a debate:
   Does this candidate possess a “biblical worldview”?  A biblical worldview is more than making a statement of faith, it is seeing if their ideas on government, economics, and various issues reflect the blueprint God gives us in the Bible.  It is our roadmap to success as a Nation!
   Does this candidate know and possess the dream of God for America?  Seeing past our problems is what enables us to achieve breakthrough for our future.
   Does this candidate’s heart have the capacity to act with wisdom and compassion towards an entire Nation?  If a ruler does not love those they serve, they are not fit to rule.
   Does this candidate have a sense of where God is taking America in the next 4 years, and does it reflect the Kingdom?
   Does this candidate have the humility and courage to surround them with powerful people who know more than they do on any given topic?  Can we identify those people who currently play those roles in their life?
This is not an opportunity to scrutinize or dishonor people by pointing out or bringing up their weaker spots.  It is, however; an opportunity to look for God’s fingerprint in the lives of any candidate seeing an elected office, so that as we exercise our right to vote, we are setting both the chosen leader and our Nation up for maximum success, seeing as best we can, who divinely fits the role of President.   We do have a choice in whom we elect.  Right now, we have an opportunity to pray for our nation’s citizens, that we would walk in personal purity and have a desire for wisdom to discern and elect a leader that possess the purity to see God and stand in His counsel.  May breakthrough come to our Nation and to those whom are called to serve her purpose!
